BIPOC Communities Counseling
At our practice, we prioritize the mental health and well-being of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) folx by offering culturally sensitive and inclusive therapy. Understanding the unique challenges and systemic issues faced by the BIPOC community, we provide a safe and supportive space where clients can explore their identities and experiences. Racism is a systemic issue. It is often reinforced in society that it is not a “safe” topic to discuss. It is common for BIPOC individuals to experience complex emotions and thoughts when experiencing microaggressions, and many BIPOC folx will express that the option to stay silent on topics of racism is the very definition of privilege. It is also common for BIPOC folx to experience ambivalence; If we speak up about race or the impacts of racism, we can be labeled as difficult. On the contrary, if we play it safe and placate feelings by downplaying our hurt, we can feel guilt and shame later about not speaking up. Often, BIPOC individuals are left questioning themselves, and these questions can get internalized over time as negative beliefs about the self. Here at ICW, we can unpack some of those internalizations and realize how much inner strength we have, and integrate experiences into the path of healing.
We also recognize the frequent exhaustion of code switching in social spaces, and offer a space for a person to be who they are without judgment. We discuss how translating languages between multiple generations can add increased roles and responsibilities to a person, and how expectations within a family system can impact the individual. We explore how various cultures and identities navigate the world through various world lenses.
Our therapeutic approach is rooted in cultural competency and cultural humility, ensuring that we honor and respect the diverse backgrounds and lived experiences of our clients. We recognize the importance of intersectionality and address the complex layers of identity that influence each person's life. Our goal is to empower BIPOC individuals by equipping them with the tools and resources needed to navigate life's challenges, foster resilience, and achieve personal growth. With a commitment to creating a non-judgmental and affirming environment, we strive to make every client feel heard, valued, empowered, and supported on their mental health journey.
