Trauma Informed Weight Lifting

Integrated Counseling and Wellness (ICW) believes in having a curious spirit which can lead our staff into more creative and innovative therapy approaches to help as many clients as we possibly can!

Trauma Informed Weight Lifting (TIWL) is a trauma informed practice that utilizes somatic and mindful attention to the body and how the body moves. TIWL helps clients connect to their bodies’ movements to support trauma processing and helps clients find more peace within their internal experience. TIWL explores themes of self trust, mindfulness and sensory connection, coping skills for trauma processing, building physical, mental, and emotional strength, and building relationship/relational trust.

To participate in TIWL, a client does not need to be working out currently, interested in working to maximum capacity, or even have a goal of transforming their body composition in any way. TIWL is an innovative approach to bringing more movement (no matter where the client may be in their movement journey) and awareness to their own internal world and experience. When a client is ready to do trauma processing, a key feature to support their safety and success is to tolerate their internal experience of that trauma (i.e. their feelings, emotions, sensations, thoughts, behaviors, beliefs, etc). 

We take great care of our clients and do not practice beyond our licensed capacity, and therefore, seek continued professional consultation and collaboration with trainers and movement experts when engaging in this tool with clients.
